about

When it Strikes:

Hi Mikey,

Tony, Lucie and I were driving home late one night at about 3:30 am, the three of us sitting across the front seat of my Toyota pick up truck. We were on the Hollywood freeway headed south toward Silverlake. It was after an after party and we were affected by drink and other mind altering substances. It was just a short hop on the freeway, only a few miles. It was foggy out and that freeway was pretty dark, but we saw something on the roadway up ahead, out in front of an overpass. We slowed down. It was in our lane and we had to slow way down, check our rear view mirrors, and pull around this thing. What was it? As we passed slowly by, we could see that it was a dead body right there on the freeway! "Shit! That looks bad!" one of us said.

The contorted figure on the concrete, with twisted clothing and twisted limbs, looked horrid! "Someone jumped!" "from that fucking overpass!!" "and then got hit by a car!". It took all three of us to string those thoughts together. We were in shock, our pulse racing. We got back in our lane after we got past the body. The image of the dead body was burned into our memory. The next evening we met for rehearsal.

Putting the memory of that horrid image and those feeling into a song was the only thing we could do. Lucie had written down some lyrics and I had a pounding drum beat. Tony showed Claudia a riff and some chords on guitar that fit with a bass idea he had. Tony turned up the bass and guitar amps nice and loud. With the instruments going, Lucie started singing and before we knew it, the song was up and running. Lucie's repetition at the end is

"When It Strikes, When It Strikes, When It
Strikes..."

The second or third time we played the song, I had our cassette recorder
turned on and we got a good raw version recorded.
